Starlink Petition Group Press Release

3rd of November 2025 – Starlink Freedom Day

The 3rd of November 2025 marks a truly historic and exciting milestone for the Falkland Islands: the official launch of licensed Starlink services, and the reopening of personal VSAT licensing by the Communications Regulator. This achievement represents the culmination of a determined community effort and the tremendous success of the Starlink petition, which galvanised widespread support across the Islands to secure a more modern, affordable and reliable broadband future.

After more than eighteen months of campaigning, consultation and public engagement, the Starlink Petition Group is proud to see this vision finally realised. The journey has not been short; Islanders have demonstrated extraordinary patience and commitment as this initiative progressed through careful legal, technical and regulatory review. Today proves that when our community stands together and speaks with one voice, meaningful change can be delivered.

We recognise the commercial settlement reached between the Falkland Islands Government and Sure, which will allow the new VSAT regime to proceed without delay, following potential legal proceedings. While the agreed compensation of up to £6.2 million is significant, it ensures progress and avoids a lengthy judicial challenge. It is also noted that Sure has subsequently announced unlimited broadband packages for local customers, a welcome improvement, though one that arrives only now that genuine competition is here. Many across the community will reflect on the degree of support shown to Falkland Islanders seeking better connectivity in the years preceding this decision.

This moment belongs first and foremost to the people of the Falkland Islands. We extend sincere thanks to all the Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Executive Council, the Communications Regulator, Government officers, and, of course, to every Falkland Islander who signed the petition, to all who contributed feedback to the Select Committee, and championed the need for modern broadband access. We should also not forget all those individuals who helped the Committee organise the petition and the July 2024 town hall meeting. Your collective efforts have helped deliver a turning point for digital progress in these islands.

The 3rd of November 2025 is now officially designated as Starlink Freedom Day, so let the celebrations begin. It represents not just a change in broadband options, but the beginning of a new chapter in our telecommunications future. With Sure SA’s exclusive licence expiring in 2027, significant work still lies ahead to shape a competitive, world-class digital environment for generations to come. The Starlink Petition Group will continue to evolve to support this mission and ensure that the promise of choice, fairness, and connectivity for all is fully realised.

We celebrate this achievement with pride and optimism. The Falkland Islands asked for better broadband, and together, we made it happen!

Chairman’s Quote

“Today is a moment of pride for every Falkland Islander who stood up and said our community deserves better connectivity. This has always been about fairness, opportunity and giving every resident and business a choice. Starlink Freedom Day is a testament to what can be achieved when our community works together with determination and respect. We look forward to a future where innovation thrives and the people of the Falklands continue to lead the way in shaping their digital destiny.”
